One of Central Florida's hottest suburbs, Lake Mary is a bedroom community about 25 miles north of Orlando, nestled between Interstate 4 and U.S. Highway 17-92. Lake Mary's history is younger than surrounding communities, but possibly more colorful. By the 1920s, Swedish immigrant Axel Evad Sjoblom had purchased land and began a number of businesses in the area. While Sjoblom might have been credit's for most the city's growth, the more flamboyant Frank Evans overshadowed Sjoblom's efforts and founded the community's chamber of commerce in 1923, later accepting the governor's appointment as county commissioner. Today, Lake Mary little resembles its sleepy past. the attractively streetscaped Lake Mary Boulevard offers everything from fast food to fine dining. A number of high-tech businesses have relocated to the city's business park, located just north of Heathrow off Interstate 4 at Lake Mary Boulevard. With the Seminole Town Center just to the north, the prestigious Heathrow neighborhood to the west and easy access to major highways on sides -- professionals, and young families alike clamor for the Lake Mary lifestyle.
