Eustis, just east of its sister city Mt. Dora, is located on 7,000-acre Lake Eustis, another of the Harris chain of lakes. This diverse community is large enough to offer most big-city amenities, yet small enough to retain its small-town charm. Eustis, like its neighboring towns, is experiencing controlled growth as Orlandoans seek a safer, more friendly community, away from the hustle of the big city. Fishermen brag of the largemouth bass, speckled perch, and catfish they catch in Lake Eustis, and boaters exclaim over the breath-taking beauty of the Dora Canal that connects lakes Dora and Eustis. The Ocala National Forest, home of many crystal clear natural springs, borders Eustis to the north. The primary employer in Eustis is Florida Hospital-Waterman, and many people commute to Orlando companies. A refurbished bandshell, circa 1926, was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with the Palms House and the Eustis Historical Museum. The quaint neighborhood of Washington Avenue also recently received designation as an historic district. The town itself wraps around the northeast corner of Lake Eustis, and the downtown "village" is home to a restaurant/nightclub that seats 350. Downtown Eustis is also the scene for monthly street parties, frequented by residents countywide. A completed is Lake Walk, which is a 1,500 foot long, 8-foot wide concrete walkway around the lakefront, and has four covered gazebos with benches, and two piers with 20 boat slips.
